What is the difference between a credit card and a debit card?

A credit card is an extension of credit. When using a credit card, you are using borrowed money which you agree to pay back. Purchases you make using a credit card are subject to applicable finance charges and credit balance limits. When using a debit card, you are using your own money. Transactions are posted directly to your checking account and subject to the available balance in your checking account and daily dollar amount and transaction amount limits set by your financial institution.
