Landmark History

Landmark Credit Union began in February 1933, at the height of the Great Depression. Foundry employees of the Rex Chainbelt Company pooled their funds together to form the Rex #2 Credit Union.

In December of 1937, Rex #1 and Rex #2 Credit Unions merged to form Chabelco Credit Union (Chain Belt Company Credit Union). In 1970, the credit union moved to our original West Milwaukee branch at 51st and Mitchell. After the Chain Belt Company became Rexnord, Inc. in 1975, the membership voted to change the Credit Union's name to Rexnord Credit Union.

By 1985, we needed a new name again to reflect the diversification of membership allowed by our new community charter. Landmark Credit Union was chosen as the name to spring us into the future.

Our growth continued when Lake Country Credit Union merged with Landmark in April, 1986 and gave us our Oconomowoc branch. Then, in April, 1987, the New Berlin Industrial Association Credit Union joined Landmark. This credit union formed the base for the New Berlin branch and our, then Administrative Offices.

In March, 1988, the BROOKFIELD-METCO Community Credit Union also joined us and became the Brookfield branch. In 1989, Waukesha Credit Union joined us. A new facility was completed in 1993, and is now the site of our Waukesha branch. Then, in late 1998, CityFirst Credit Union merged with Landmark and became our first branch located in Wauwatosa, and incorporating our Brookfield branch to the Wauwatosa location.

Landmark also formed a financial planning and investment department in 1988 to provide insurance, mutual funds, tax-deferred annuities and other investment products to our members. Since its inception, Landmark Investment Center has become an important addition to the Landmark family.

In August of 1999, Landmark opened its newly upgraded West Milwaukee facility to provide service to our members in the Milwaukee area into the new millennium. In October, 1999, Landmark opened a branch on Main Street in Sussex. Then, just a few weeks later in November, another new facility was opened just off Highway 83 on Cardinal Lane in Hartland.

In January 2001, we opened our first in-store branch inside a new Wal-Mart store at 3355 S. 27th Street, Milwaukee. The Milwaukee South branch moved to a free-standing location at 4000 S. 27th Street in February, 2006. In December 2001, Landmark opened another in-store branch inside the newly remodeled Wal-Mart at 1901 Market Way in Watertown. The third in-store branch opened in August 2002 inside the Wal-Mart of Midtown Center, near 60th and Capitol in Milwaukee.

In July of 2007, Belle City Credit Union located at 3413 Rapids Drive in Racine merged with Landmark. An additional branch was added in December 2007 at I45 and County Line Road in Germantown. In December 2008, an additional in-store branch was opened inside Sendik's Fine Foods (now Pick 'n Save) at 7780 S. Lovers Lane Road in Franklin.

In 2009, Landmark began a remodeling project for a move of the Administrative Offices to 5445 S. Westridge Drive in New Berlin. In addition, several smaller credit unions merged with Landmark. Wiscor Credit Union was the first, then Lifetime Credit Union which added a location at 9515 W. National Avenue in West Allis. A few months later, ALLCO, with 2 new locations at 6512 W. Greenfield Avenue in West Allis (named our West Allis East branch) and 2190 W. Wisconsin Avneue in Grafton, became part of the Landmark family. Lastly, First Security Credit Union joined Landmark with a location at 13600 W. Greenfield Avenue in Brookfield to bring the total number of Landmark branches to 17.

Plans are also underway for a location inside a Pick ‘n Save store in West Bend and a new free-standing branch in Oak Creek. Stay tuned for more details!
